Machu Picchu Tickets 2026: How to Book Before They Sell Out

So you’ve decided to see Machu Picchu. Great call. Now for the part nobody warns you about: getting the tickets is genuinely the trickiest piece of the whole trip, and it trips up way more people than the altitude does.

Here’s the thing — Machu Picchu tickets aren’t like buying a movie ticket the night before. They sell out. Sometimes weeks ahead, sometimes months. So let’s get you sorted before you book a single flight.

Why Machu Picchu Tickets Sell Out So Fast

Peru caps how many people can enter each day to protect the site. We’re talking a hard limit, with timed entry slots and set walking routes once you’re inside. That’s good news for the ruins and for your photos (fewer crowds), but it means demand way outstrips supply during busy months.

If you’re traveling between June and August, treat the tickets as the very first thing you lock in. Everything else can flex. This can’t. (Not sure when to go? Check our guide to the best time to visit Machu Picchu.)

Where to Buy Official Machu Picchu Tickets

You’ve basically got two routes.

The official government website

Tickets come from Peru’s Ministry of Culture, and their official site is machupicchu.gob.pe. Buying direct is the cheapest way and you’re not paying any middleman. The catch: the site can be clunky, payment cards sometimes get declined, and it’s a bit of a headache if you’re not used to it.

Going through a tour operator

A reputable operator handles the booking for you, bundles in the train and a guide, and saves you the stress. You’ll pay a bit more for the convenience, but for a lot of first-timers, that peace of mind is worth it. Our Full Day Machu Picchu Trip and our Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour both include your entry sorted in advance, so you never have to wrestle with the government site.

Pick the Right Circuit

This part confuses everyone, so here’s the plain-English version. The site is split into circuits, and your ticket only covers one. Circuits 1 and 2 give you that classic postcard view of the whole citadel — that’s what most people picture. Circuit 2 is usually the sweet spot. Circuit 3 keeps you lower and is lighter on walking, better if you’ve got mobility concerns but it skips the iconic upper viewpoint.

Whatever you do, read the circuit description before you click buy. People accidentally book a route that doesn’t include the famous photo spot and only realize once they’re there. Don’t be that person.

Want to Climb Huayna Picchu?

That steep, pointy mountain behind the ruins in every famous photo? That’s Huayna Picchu, and you can climb it — but only with a special add-on ticket, and those slots are tiny. They vanish first. If hiking it is on your list, book the moment tickets open. There’s also Machu Picchu Mountain, which is a longer but less vertigo-inducing climb.

How Far Ahead Should You Book?

Quick guide:

  • Peak season (June–August): 2–3 months ahead, minimum.
  • Shoulder months: 3–4 weeks is usually fine.
  • Huayna Picchu, any season: as early as humanly possible.

A Few Common Mistakes to Skip

Don’t buy from a random site that pops up in your search ads — stick to the official platform or a licensed tour operator. Don’t forget your passport; the name on your ticket has to match it, and they check at the gate. And budget realistically — see our full Machu Picchu trip cost breakdown before you go.
