Cusco Travel Guide 2026: Things to Do, Where to Stay and Safety Tips
What to see in Cusco, where to stay, how the tourist ticket works and how to stay safe, written by a tour team that lives here.
Cusco wakes up early. By 6 a.m. the bakers on the slopes of San Blas are pulling round loaves out of wood ovens, school kids in uniforms are cutting across the Plaza de Armas, and the first tour vans are idling on Avenida El Sol. We've run our tours from this city for years, and this Cusco travel guide is the version we give friends from the US: what to see, where to stay, how to stay safe, and how to pace yourself at 11,150 feet.
Why Cusco deserves more than a layover
Most US travelers see Cusco as the gateway to Machu Picchu and give it one rushed afternoon. That's a mistake. UNESCO inscribed the City of Cuzco as a World Heritage Site in 1983, describing it as the imperial capital of the Inca, redesigned under Pachacuteq in the 15th century, later built over by the Spanish with Baroque churches and palaces. You can see both layers on almost every block: Inca stonework at knee height, colonial balconies above.
The city sits at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft). Give yourself at least two full days here, or start lower in the Sacred Valley and come up later. Our guide to https://machulasjourney.com/blog/altitude-sickness-cusco-prevention/ explains how to plan the first 48 hours.
Cusco travel guide: the top things to do
Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral
In Inca times this was Haukaypata, the great ceremonial square. Today it's framed by the Cathedral and the Jesuit church of La Compañía. Come back at night, when the façades are lit and the arcades fill with families buying hot emoliente from street carts. The Cathedral charges its own entrance and is not part of the city's tourist ticket.
Qoricancha, the Temple of the Sun
UNESCO names Qoricancha among the city's key Inca structures. The Dominicans built the church and convent of Santo Domingo on top of it, and the contrast is the whole point: look for the curved wall on the outside, where the Inca masonry fits so tightly that our guides like to challenge guests to slide a sheet of paper between the stones. They never manage it.
San Blas, the artisans' quarter
Steep, narrow and whitewashed, San Blas is where workshops, small cafés and some of the best boutique hotels are. On the way up, walk Hatun Rumiyoc street to find the famous twelve-angled stone — and the quieter stretch of wall around the corner that most groups skip. Climb to the little plaza at the top in the late afternoon for the view over the red-tile roofs.
Sacsayhuamán and the ruins above the city
The zigzag walls of Sacsayhuamán sit on the hill right above the center, and it's here that Inti Raymi is staged every June 24 (our https://machulasjourney.com/blog/inti-raymi-festival-guide/ guide covers tickets and crowds). Nearby are Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay. All four are covered by the Boleto Turístico. If you'd rather not handle transport and timing, our https://machulasjourney.com/tour/half-day-cusco-city-tour/ links the Qoricancha with these four sites in a single afternoon.
San Pedro Market
Go hungry. The juice ladies call out to you as you walk in, the soup counters at the back serve steaming bowls of caldo to workers at 8 a.m., and the potato stalls show you just how many varieties the Andes grew. Keep your phone in a front pocket here; it's busy. For what to order, see our https://machulasjourney.com/blog/ pillar.
What does the Cusco tourist ticket include?
The Boleto Turístico del Cusco is the pass you'll use most. As of 2026 the full ticket costs S/130 for foreign adults and is valid for 10 days, covering Sacsayhuamán and the nearby ruins, several city museums, Tipón, Pikillaqta and the Sacred Valley sites of Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray. Partial circuits cost S/70. If you plan to visit the valley too — and you should — buy the full one. Our https://machulasjourney.com/blog/sacred-valley-peru-guide/ explains how to use it there.
| Pass | Price (foreign adult, 2026) | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Full Boleto Turístico | S/130 | 10 days |
| Circuit I (ruins above Cusco) | S/70 | 1–2 days (confirm at purchase) |
| Circuit II (city museums + South Valley) | S/70 | 1–2 days (confirm at purchase) |
| Circuit III (Sacred Valley) | S/70 | 1–2 days (confirm at purchase) |
Where to stay in Cusco: neighborhoods compared
- Historic center (around the Plaza): walk everywhere, but expect noise from late-night bars and morning parades.
- San Blas: charming and quieter, but the climb back up after dinner is a workout at altitude. Not ideal on night one.
- San Cristóbal: above the Plaza, close to the path up to Sacsayhuamán, with great views.
- Around San Pedro and Santa Ana: more local, more affordable, a short walk from the center.
Whatever you choose, ask about heating. June and July nights in Cusco can drop close to freezing (around 32 °F / 0 °C), and if there's one line of this Cusco travel guide our guests thank us for later, it's this one.
Is Cusco safe for American travelers?
The US State Department rates Peru at Level 2, "Exercise increased caution," in its advisory updated in September 2026. The advisory notes that the City of Cusco and nearby sites like the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are outside the specific areas it flags as higher risk. Crime is still common in Peru, so the usual rules apply:
- Use app-based taxis or ones your hotel calls; the State Department warns against hailing unknown taxis on the street.
- Keep phones and wallets in front pockets in markets and crowded festivals.
- Use ATMs inside banks or malls, during the day.
- Be cautious with "spiritual" ceremonies offering ayahuasca; the advisory specifically mentions centers in tourist areas such as Cusco.
Honestly, the thing that ruins more trips here than crime is altitude. Walk slowly, drink water, go easy on alcohol the first night.
How many days do you need in Cusco?
Every Cusco travel guide will give you a different number; we recommend three nights in the city at minimum, plus time in the valley and at Machu Picchu. A typical first-timer's rhythm:
- Day 1: arrive, rest, slow walk to the Plaza and Qoricancha.
- Day 2: San Blas in the morning, ruins above the city in the afternoon.
- Day 3: San Pedro Market, museums, a cooking class or a Rainbow Mountain day if you're acclimatized.
Our https://machulasjourney.com/tour/cusco-destinations-classic-tours-6d-5n/ follows this pace and adds the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. If you only have a long weekend, the https://machulasjourney.com/tour/sacred-valley-machupicchu-cusco-city-tour-3d-2n/ packs the highlights into three days. And once Cusco hooks you, https://machulasjourney.com/blog/ is the classic next stop.
FAQ
What is Cusco best known for?
It was the capital of the Inca Empire, and today it's a UNESCO World Heritage city where Inca walls support colonial buildings. It's also the base for visiting Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.
What is the altitude of Cusco?
About 3,400 m (11,150 ft). Plan a slow first day and see a doctor if symptoms get worse instead of better.
Do I need the Boleto Turístico?
If you'll visit Sacsayhuamán, the Sacred Valley ruins or the city museums, yes. The full ticket (S/130 in 2026) is valid for 10 days.
Can I walk around Cusco at night?
The central streets around the Plaza are busy until late and generally fine with normal precautions. Use a called taxi to return from outlying areas.
